Still More Waterfront Homes

Florida oceanfront property is probably some of the most expensive real estate in the United States. It is amazing what some people will pay for a small hunk of land that has a view of the ocean. To look out your two story plate glass window at a 180 degree vista of pristine blue water, is like the ultimate in gigantic hi-definition tv. But it does have its down side. The constant battering of salt air eats away practically everything in your house and your view out the window has now become a vista through a sheet of salt; not much different from the view out a textured glass shower door. The water is breathtaking when it is calm, but add a category 3 hurricane with 130 mile an hour winds and 15 foot storm surge and you better get out your life raft and scuba gear. Oh yeah, with global warming worsening, the surf line is getting closer to your back door each day.

Despite the pitfalls it can be quite lovely. I still would like to live on the beach.

Sometime during the 1990's, infinity swimming pools were introduced to residential construction. These are pools that spill over one or more sides into a gutter or drain. As someone looks out over the pool at the ocean, there is an illusion that your pool is part of the ocean, creating a pretty cool effect. If you recall watching the TV show, Miami vice, they featured homes with this amenity. I believe infinity pools first were used in island resort hotels. The house shown above has one.

The ultimate in swimming pools is shown above, a rooftop pool with infinite edge. Can you imagine 7000 gallons of water hanging 2 stories over you as you sit on your patio? You have to really trust the engineer and hope he's not a thirteenth generation relative of the designer of the Tower of Pisa.

This last house is built on a large lakefront lot in western Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. It has an elevated spa with a water slide spilling into the swimming pool. This concludes this episode of Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous. You better keep buying lottery tickets!
